SynBio Africa Global Catastrophic Biological Risks Initiative in Africa

In response to the COVID-19 Pandemic global threat, SynBio Africa launched the Global Catastrophic Biological Risks Initiative, an initiative focused on building Africa’s capacity to prevent m detect and respond to future pandemics. A series of regional technical workshops facilitated by global experts in the various fields relevant to addressing global health security threats were organized. The pandemic preparedness regional workshops held provided a platform for workshop participants (comprising country delegates, subject matter experts and host organizations) to share knowledge about biological events that could pose pandemic threats, and to discuss the state of pandemic preparedness in the Africa regions. Consensus was reached among workshop participants on the need for a harmonized legal framework for addressing Global Biological Threats as an integral part of pandemic preparedness planning for the sub-regions and the entire African continent. Identified priorities include securing funding for pandemic prevention and preparedness planning and improving engagement with policy makers to drive the development and implementation of evidence-driven biosecurity policies and legal frameworks. The outcomes of this initiative contribute not only to the immediate response to pandemics but also lay the foundation for sustained resilience and innovation in the face of future global health challenges.
